NEW YORK - Shares of some top coal companies were down at the close of trading:

Quotes

ACI	12.3	1.84
CNX	20.8	1.97
MEE	12.18	2.08
BTU	18.75	2.5

Arch Coal fell $5.39 or 15.2 percent, to $30.18.

Consol Energy fell $7.77 or 15.8 percent, to $41.47.

Massey Energy fell $6.69 or 16.8 percent, to $33.08.

Peabody Energy fell $7.58 or 15.6 percent, to $41.05.
