NEW YORK - Apparel maker Liz Claiborne Inc. said Monday it shifted the head of its Mexx brand in Europe to a new role as it seeks to turn the brand around.

Jeff Fardell will become senior vice president and managing director, market development for Liz Claiborne. He will be replaced by Tom Fitzgerald, who becomes interim chief executive for the Mexx brand in Europe.
The company is seeking a permanent chief executive and expects to name one in early 2009.
Fitzgerald is also continuing in his roll as senior vice president, direct brands services at Liz Claiborne.
Liz Claiborne bought Mexx, which offers men's, women's and children's clothing, in 2001. It is part of the company's direct-brands segment, along with Juicy Couture, Lucky Brand and Kate Spade.
John Moore, most recently vice president and creative director of Mossimo Inc.'s Modern Amusement brand, will be consulting vice president, creative, effective immediately, overseeing all design product development and merchandising activities. Moore was also previously an executive with Abercrombie & Fitch's Hollister Co. brand.
Liz Claiborne said it will also work on improving Mexx's product appeal, link it more closely with the wholesale and retail presentations and strengthen retail operations.
