SAIC wins $5.2 billion deal from cancer institute

SAN DIEGO - Science Applications International Corp. said Monday that its subsidiary SAIC-Frederick Inc. has won a contract potentially valued at $5.2 billion to help operate and provide technical support to the National Cancer Institute's research and development center in Frederick, Md.

The award contract, which SAIC said is the largest single research contract awarded by the Department of Health and Human Services, has a three-year base period of performance, five one-year award-term options and one two-year option. The contract has an estimated value of $5.2 billion if all options are exercised.

Under the new contract, SAIC-Frederick will provide operations and technical support to the mission of the National Cancer Institute in basic research, research and development and preclinical research and development

The research and development center seeks to develop new technologies and translate scientific discoveries into agents for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer and AIDS.

SAIC has provided operations and technical support for the research and development center since 1995.
