Oncaspar-IV is a treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common type of cancer in children. The Commission of the European Communities awarded the drug orphan medicinal product status, which will block rival versions of the drug from the market for 10 years if regulators approve Oncaspar-IV for sale.
Oncaspar is designed to kill cancer cells by starving them of an essential amino acid.
In morning trading, Enzon shares slipped 18 cents, or 2.3 percent, to $7.52.
