DEERFIELD, Ill. - Distiller Fortune Brands Inc. said Tuesday that Chief Executive Bruce Carbonari will take the chairman title as Norm Wesley retires, effective Oct. 1.

Wesley will remain a member of the board of Fortune Brands, which sells wine and spirits as well as home and hardware products and golf equipment.
Carbonari, who had been company president and chief operating officer, took over the CEO post from Wesley in January.
The company said taking the chairman post completes the transition that began when Carbonari became chief executive.
Wesley joined the company in 1987 as part of the acquisition of the company's former office products subsidiary. He became chairman chief operating officer in 1999.
