HELSINKI, Finland - Nokia Corp., the world's largest cell phone maker, said Tuesday it will buy mobile messaging company Oz Communications of Canada to give consumers access to instant messaging services and e-mails through their mobile devices.
No financial details were disclosed. Nokia said the deal was expected to be completed by the end of 2008.
Privately owned Oz is headquartered in Montreal and has about 220 employees. Nokia said it was attracted by the Canadian company's technology that lets handset users tap into familiar computing programs from Microsoft Corp., Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc.
Oz, which has been working with Nokia since 2003, also has relationships with mobile operators such as AT&T Inc., France Telecom's Orange and Deutsche Telekom AG's T-Mobile and handset makers Samsung Electronics Co., Sony Ericsson and Motorola Inc.
