The company cut sales and support positions in the division. About half were located in Santa Fe and the other half were located throughout the country. Thornburg Mortgage now has 156 staffers in its Santa Fe office.

Company Chief Executive Larry Goldstone said in a statement the cuts were necessary because of the difficult environment. The company is focusing on its "long-term survival," he said.

Shares rose 35 cents, or 30.4 percent, to $1.50 during afternoon trading.
