The McClatchy Co. said Tuesday the change will be effective Oct. 13.
Ray, 38, has been Tribune chief financial officer since 2007 and has been involved in special projects to grow an online audience and revenue.
"Bruce Ray is a natural leader whose broad business experience will serve the newspaper well going forward," McClatchy chairman Gary Pruitt said in a statement.
The Tribune has a daily circulation of 37,000 and a Sunday circulation of 43,000.
Visci, 55, came to The Tribune in 2004 after working as president and publisher of the San Jose Mercury News.
"It's time for a change," Visci said. "While I still thrill to the sound of our presses running every night, I know The Tribune will benefit from fresh eyes and new ideas for the Internet era."
The McClatchy Co. is the third largest newspaper company in the United States, with 30 daily newspapers, about 50 non-dailies, and direct marketing and direct mail operations.
