MINNEAPOLIS - Defense contractor Alliant Techsystems Inc. said Wednesday that the Army has given it a $197 million order for small-caliber ammunition.

The order from the Army's Sustainment Command is for $184 million in ammunition and includes $13 million for upgrades to the company's ammunition plant in Independence, Mo. The facility is the largest supplier of ammunition to the U.S. military, making ammunition that includes .50-caliber, 5.56mm and 20mm cartridges. Alliant Techsystems expects to deliver 1.4 billion rounds of ammunition in the 2009 fiscal year.
