NYSE

Monsanto Co., up $7.26 at $81.44

The world's largest seed maker's quarterly loss narrowed on higher sales, and it lifted its four-year profit outlook on grain demand.

Alcoa Inc., down $2 at $14.71

Profit fell 52 percent for the aluminum maker and it plans to conserve cash by suspending its stock buyback plan and some capital projects.

MetLife Inc., down $9.87 at $27

The life insurer will cut an unspecified number of jobs this month and quarterly results will be hurt by lower investment income and fee revenue.

J.C. Penney Co., down $1.31 at $27.25

September sales in stores open at least a year, a key retail metric, sank 12.4 percent and Penney cut its third-quarter profit outlook.
