Apple chief executive Steve Jobs exulted over the company's latest financial results as it rides a wave of strong iPhone sales, its newest product line.

Apple said it sold 6.9 million iPhones during the three months period ending September 27.

"Apple just reported one of the best quarters in its history, with a spectacular performance by the iPhone - we sold more phones than RIM [the maker of Blackberry phones]," Jobs said in statement.

Research In Motion said in its latest report it sold 6.1 million Blackberry smartphones.

The company's existing product lines contributed to the results, with sales of 11.1 million iPod music players and 2.6 million Macintosh computers.

Total sales were $7.9 billion for its fiscal fourth quarter, generating a profit of $1.14 billion.
