Photos of a spider devouring a significantly larger bird in Australia have hit the Internet this week. The photos appeared for the first time in the website forum Ars Technica on October 16, according to ninemsn.com on Thursday.

The images – reportedly taken in Cairns, at the North East of Australia -- show a golden orb weaver spider color black clenching its legs around a bird caught in a web. The identity of the photographer remains anonymous.

The spider usually preys on large insects but it is unusual to see one eating a bird, said a head spider keeper from NSW's Australian Reptile Park. He added that this species of spiders can be as big as a human hand, according to the Australian newspaper The Cairns Post.

Specialists believe the bird was caught on the spider web first and died of fright, dehydration or exhaustion rather than the direct attack from the spider, ninemsn.com reported.

"However, it does appear that the spider has decided that good food shouldn't go to waste and is therefore attempting to eat the bird, which I find entirely believable," said Associate Professor Ron Atkinson according to the source.
