While campaigning in New Mexico on Sunday, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama pledged to protect U.S. borders and enforce the law against hiring undocumented workers while also opening a path to citizenship for the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the U.S.

Obama was in Albuquerque for a rally to encourage the Latino community to vote for him in the presidential election just eight days away. At the rally was also attended by Bill Richardson, the only current Hispanic governor of a state.

Hispanics make up 40 percent of state's voters.

In a policy statement found on Obama's web site, it states that Obama's policy would support a system that allows undocumented immigrants who are in good standing to pay a fine, learn English, not violate the law, and go to the back of the line for the opportunity to become citizens.

He also favors expediting citizenship procedures for legal immigrants who have fought overseas in the U.S. military.
