Ted Stevens found guilty of corruption

Alaska Republican Senator Ted Stevens was found guilty by a federal jury for receiving tens of thousands of dollars for home renovations and other gifts from top leaders at oil company VECO Corp. and others and making false statements.

After the one month trial, Stevens, 84, was found guilty of all the seven charges he faced. Prosecutors told jurors that Stevens had received more than $250,000 in free home renovations including transforming a modest mountain cabin into a modern two-story home, a sauna and a wine cellar, the Associated Press reports today. He had denied any wrong-doing.

The senator faces up to five years in prison on each count. However, given his age, and public service record it is unlikely that Stevens will receive a long jail sentence if any, according to the source.
