Ted Stevens guilty verdict won't stop his campaign

27 October 2008 @ 07:55 pm ET

NEW YORK - Senator Ted Stevens was found guilty of making false statements on thousands of dollars of renovations and gifts he received from an Alaskan oil company, but the verdict won't stop the senator's campaign for the next elections.

Stevens, 84 is the longest-serving Senate Republican in the history of the United States . He was convicted on seven charges of false statements after prosecutors said he received more than $250,000 in free home renovations from oil company Veco Corp.

He had denied any wrong doing and said he paid $160,000 thinking this amount covered all the costs for home renovations, the Associated Press reported.

Stevens is an acknowledged figure in Alaska where he has provided plenty of money. The airport in Anchorage was named after him. Stevens is still running for a seat in the senate a week later. But it is likely that his re-election will be damaged after the verdict, reports say.
