The FDA's decision will allow Ranexa to market the drug as an initial treatment for chronic angina. Previously it was approved only in patients who did not have success with other drugs. Angina is chest pain a person feels when his or her heart is not getting enough blood.
CV Therapeutics said Ranexa's label will indicate the drug can be used on its own or in combination with beta blockers and in other drugs. The packaging also will tout Ranexa's effects on other heart ailments and blood sugar control.
Sales of Ranexa totaled $66.7 million in 2007, a large majority of CV Therapeutics' revenue. The drug was launched in early 2006.
In premarket trading, CV Therapeutics shares climbed $1.30, or 13.4 percent, to $11. The stock finished at $9.70 on Wednesday.
