CARLSBAD, Calif. - ViaSat Inc., a provider of satellite communication services, said Thursday its fiscal second quarter earnings rose about 8 percent on growing revenue from new contracts.

The company said earnings in the quarter ended Oct. 3 rose to $9.3 million, or 29 cents per share, from $8.6 million or 27 cents per share in the year-ago quarter.
ViaSat said adjusted earnings, which exclude one-time acquisition charges, were 39 cents per share in the latest quarter.
Analysts expected income of 33 cents per share, according to a poll by Thomson Reuters. Analysts typically exclude one-time items from their estimates.
Revenue rose almost 9 percent to $159.3 million from $146.6 million, beating the analyst consensus estimate of $155.7 million.
ViaSat Chief Executive Mark Dankberg said revenue was boosted by growing demand from defense markets.
Shares of ViaSat rose 20 cents to $19.11 in afternoon trading.
