WASHINGTON - The Grocery Manufacturers Association, which represents food, beverage and consumer products companies, spent nearly $1.7 million in the third quarter to lobby on food safety, trade and other issues, according to a recent disclosure report.
The trade group lobbied on the proposed legislation that would change how the federal government prevents and reacts to issues of food safety. It also lobbied on legislation that would ban bisphenol A, a chemical used to make plastic food containers, in children's products.
The group--whose nearly 500 members include Archer-Daniels-Midland Co., ConAgra Foods Inc. and Hormel Foods Corp.--also lobbied on issues related to trade and energy, according to the report filed Oct. 20 with the House clerk's office.
Besides Congress, the GMA lobbied the Food and Drug Administration, Federal Trade Commission and other agencies during the July-September quarter.
Eileen Harley, a former staff member of the House Rules Committee, was among those lobbying on the trade group's behalf.
