CHESHIRE, Conn. - Alexion Pharmaceuticals Inc. said Tuesday David Keiser will retire as president and chief operating officer at the end of the year.

The company said Keiser's responsibilities would be distributed among Alexion's management team, reporting to Chief Executive Leonard Bell.
Keiser will serve out his term on the company's board of directors, which ends in 2009, and will be available as a consultant for the company.
Keiser joined Alexion in 1992 after 15 years at various pharmaceutical companies, including Hoffmann La Roche and G.D. Searle. He was appointed to the additional role of president in 2002.
Shares of Alexion Pharmaceuticals fell 67 cents to $41.08 in morning trading.
