The Fairfield, N.J. owner and operator of energy from waste and renewable energy projects made environmental, safety and other changes to the Walter B. Hall Resource Recovery Facility before reopening it. The plant has been in service since 1986 but was closed in June 2007.

The facility can process up to 1,125 tons of municipal solid waste per day and generate 240,000 pounds per hour of steam that Covanta plans to sell to local refineries for electricity generation.

Shares of Covanta fell 76 cents, or 3.6 percent, to $20.31 in early afternoon trading.
