EXTON, Pa. - ViroPharma Inc. on Wednesday released new data on the effectiveness of its drug Cinryze against a hereditary disorder that causes dangerous swelling.

ViroPharma plans to begin marketing Cinryze next month to treat hereditary angioedema, a protein deficiency that causes rapid swelling of the hands, feet and face.
The company said a study of 88 patients with the disease showed their symptoms improved within a median of 30 minutes after receiving treatment with Cinryze.
ViroPharma said 93 percent of patients reported improved symptoms within four hours of taking the drug. None of the patients in the study who experienced larynx problems required hospitalization, the company reported.
The results were reported at the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology's annual meeting in Seattle.
Shares of ViroPharma Inc. fell 29 cents, or 2.6 percent, to close at $11.03.
