SAN FRANCISCO - Engineering and construction company URS Corp. said Monday that a team led by its Washington division has signed an agreement to become the parent organization managing and operating nuclear waste sites in northwest England.

A consortium, Nuclear Management Partners Ltd., will manage work valued at up to $2 billion a year in a five-year contract with an option to extend the contract periodically for 17 years. Nuclear Management Partners will manage and operate services such as commercial operations, waste management, support services, decontamination and decommissioning and new construction projects.
The agreement with the U.K. Nuclear Decommissioning Authority are for the Sellafield sites, which are among the largest nuclear sites in the U.K., storing and treating nuclear waste from the U.K.'s military and civil nuclear programs.
Shares of San Francisco-based URS climbed $5.05, or 20 percent, to $30.69 in morning trading.
