MONTVALE, N.J. - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a new drug application for a cream designed to treat vaginal dryness and pain from intercourse, Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc. said Monday.

Synthetic Conjugated Estrongens-A Vaginal Cream will be available by prescription in the first quarter of next year.
The plant-derived cream is designed to treat symptoms of vulvar and vaginal atrophy due to menopause. It was developed by Barr subsidiary Duramed Pharmaceuticals Inc.
Barr stock fell 89 cents to $64.48 in morning trading.
