Saturday Night Live was rebuked by a spokeswoman for New York Governor David Paterson on Monday after the producers of the comedy program aired a skit over the weekend featuring a "blind" Paterson impersonator blundering through a presentation.
Paterson himself and non-profit vision preservation group Lighthouse International released statements condemning the show, saying it was in "poor taste." The program portrayed Paterson as disoriented, with a deviated eye and bursting onto a stage.
"The governor engages in humor all the time, and he can certainly take a joke. However, this particular 'Saturday Night Live' skit unfortunately chose to ridicule people with physical disabilities and imply that disabled people are incapable of having jobs with serious responsibilities," said Risa B.Heller, communications director for Gov Paterson said in a statement.
"Governor Paterson, like all elected officials, should be judged by his actions. To use his disability as the focal point of comedy is in very poor taste," she said.
Saturday Night Live did not comment on the matter.
