Microsoft emergency patch for Internet Explorer (IE)

Microsoft said on Tuesday that in response to IE threat it will immediately mobilized security engineering teams worldwide to deliver a software cure.

"We plan to release the security update tomorrow, Dec. 17, 2008 to address the vulnerability we've discussed in Microsoft Security Advisory 961051. Our target time, as always, is 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time," the US software giant said.

The perilous software flaw allow hackers to hijack Internet Explorer (IE) browsers and take over computers.

The vulnerability has affected only machines running Internet Explorer 7 under the following systems: Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows XP Service Pack 3, Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1, Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2, Windows Vista, Windows Vista Service Pack 1, and Windows Server 2008, it's also known to affect versions 5, 6, and 8 of the browser as well.

The emergency patch should be available from today.

IE is used on nearly three-quarters of the world's computers, industry statistics from last month showed. All users are advised to install the update.
