ISuppli research group reported Tuesday worldwide notebook computer shipments were higher than desktops for the first time in the third quarter.

This was referred as "watershed event in the history of the industry," by the market researcher. This is good news not only in the PC world but also to the current economic trends that have seen electronics spending squeezed.

Shipments of notebook rose almost 40 percent to 38.6 million units compared to 2007 in third quarter, while desktop shipments fell 1.3 percent to 38.5 million.

"Momentum has been building in the notebook market for some time, so it's not a complete surprise that shipments have surpassed those of desktops," said Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst for compute platforms at iSuppli, in a statement this morning.

The top five PC OEM listings and rankings for third quarter according to iSuppli are not changed which are Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Acer, Lenovo and Toshiba.

ISuppli expects unit growth of 4.3 percent for 2009.
