Bridi fell ill on December 30 and was misdiagnosed with kidney stones, Thiago Simoes, Da Costa's boyfriend said.

Her condition worsened and she had to return to the hospital where doctors determined she was suffering from a severe Urinary Tract Infection. Bridi's doctors found out that she was also suffering from septicimea, a blood infection that limited the supply of oxygen to her extremities. The results forced doctors to amputate her hands and feet.

Mariana has had success in modeling competitions, coming fourth in Miss World Brazil in 2007 and 2008. She also came fourth in the 2007 Face of the Universe competition. In 2008 she won the best body at Miss Bikini International competition held in China.
