The new vehicle's technology is "very similar" to that featured in Renault's upcoming electric vehicles which are under development, according to the firm.

"The Renault-Nissan Alliance has its sights set on becoming the leading manufacturer of mass market zero emission vehicles," Renault said in a statement today.

Powered by a 44 kilowatt electric motor and a 15 kwh lithium-ion battery pack, the Z.E. car can be charged in six to eight hours via a household electric supply of 220 Volts. A quick 30-minutes charge is possible using a 400 V three phase socket, Renault said.

Renault will begin test drives of the Kangoo be bop Z.E. in Europe in July and mass marketing of affordable Renault electric vehicles will begin in 2011, Renault said in a statement.
