Obama writes a private letter to Jackson's family

28 June 2009 @ 05:36 pm ET

U.S. President Barack Obama has written a private letter to Michael Jackson's family, David Axelrod said on Sunday, a top White House adviser.

He said that White House has no plans to release the letter to the public.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said President Barack Obama saw pop star Michael Jackson as a "spectacular performer" and music icon.

Gibbs also said at Friday's press conference that Obama believed some aspects of Jackson's life were "sad and tragic" and offered his condolences to the musician's family.

The White House did not issue an official statement following Jackson's death on Thursday after he suffered cardiac arrest and died.

President Obama- Nice touch of class in keeping the letter to his family private. The jackson family and for that matter all people everywhere should put Michael's life in this perspective - The President of the the United States recognized Michael Jackson with the utmost respect by sending a private letter even though he, the President Obama understood that some aspects of Michael's life were sad and tragic. That speaks volumes to his life meaning, impact, and trumps all. Good job President Obama. Sincerely, A proud NAVY SEAL Veteran P.S. Hey when I go can you send my family a letter please?

I think it was nice of President Obama to send his family a private letter sending his condolences....but what I think is wrong is how people are talking about Michael Jackson more now that hes gone than they were before it's pathetic when you cant even let someone die in peace...please people you have tortured this man his whole life give him a break he has never done nothing to you cant you all just let him rest in peace...and its pathetic how everyone wants to say it's Michael's fault that he died no it was everyone else's fault who tortured him and wouldn't cut him a break making him so stressed out...and it's pathetic how people are saying his kids aren't his for christ sakes they all look like him...In my honest opinion cant everyone just leave poor Michael Jackson, his family, and his children alone for once you have tortured these poor people ever since the Jackson 5 became big they gave enough to us it's our turn to give back to them....Can't they just mourn their beloved in peace..How would you like it if your family member died and the press was getting involved in your life accusing them of stuff please just leave Michael Jackson alone let the man rest in peace....you people just want to torture him more now that you know he's no longer around and that he can't stick up for himself...I hope all the Michael Jackson haters are haunted for the rest of their lives by him and i hope you go to hell for talking so much crap about that poor man he never did anything to you so why must you people put him through all that you have been putting him through for his entire life

In as much as Obama has sent a private letter, i think it is not enough. Michael Jackson for more than a decade was to the world one of the symbols of America's greatness and deserved a bit more of the President's attention. He may not have been at the funeral because he is overseas but he should have made a direct statement to the nation at least within 24-48 hours of his death. I suspect that Obama is trying hard not to be seen as a pro African American but i think this was extreme.
