The workstation taps the new power of the Opteron series processors to deliver higher productivity, especially for multi-threaded applications, multi-tasking and mega-tasking environments that features offering up to 12 processing cores of processors and a 34 percent improve performance per watt from its previous generation quad-cores processors.

The Six-Core AMD Opteron processor, also known as “Istanbul”, allows AMD to address the need for more cores and greater scalability across a single platform.

It can also be configured with the ATI FirePro V7750 3-D workstation graphics accelerator, the company said.
Meanwhile, Cray, Dell, IBM and Sun Microsystems are expected to unveil its own servers based on the six-core AMD Opteron processors later this month.
