Fireworks show in New York City, July 4th, time, location

03 July 2009 @ 05:40 pm ET

New York 4th of July celebrations will feature fireworks on the Hudson River for the first time since the 9/11 attacks.

Macy's will release fireworks from six barges on the Hudson River at 9:20 p.m. EST and NBC will televise the event nationally. The Independence Day celebration this year also coincides with the 400th Anniversary of Henry Hudson's exploration of the river.

The fireworks can be seen from anywhere as long as an unobstructed view of the sky above the river is available. For the best public viewing areas, head to 12th Avenue below 59th Street at the following access points on 11th Avenue: 24th Street, 26th Street through 30th Street, 34th Street, 40th Street through 44th Street, 47th Street through 52nd Street and 54th Street though 57th Street.

12th Avenue will be closed below 59th Street and the West Side Highway from 22nd to 59th Street starting at 4:00 p.m. for viewing. All Hudson River Park Piers and Hudson River Park are closed to the public.

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum at West 46th Street will host the live NBC broadcast of the fireworks, with a show starting at 9 p.m. EST. That, however, is not a public event.
