The farewell service will take place on Tuesday, July 7 at 10 a.m. local time at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles according to the Jackson family publicist.

Eleven thousand tickets will be made available to the general public free of charge, according to Randy Phillips, chief executive of AEG Live, which owns the Staples Center and was Jackson's promoter.

He also said that he is not sure how they will distribute these tickets.

Los Angeles City Councilman Dennis Zine says the service could draw 100,000 fans and the center's capacity is just about 20,000.

He says with the July Fourth holiday weekend "it's the worst time ... to work something out." He also says he's concerned about the cost of police overtime for the cash-strapped city.

Details on how to register for the 10 a.m. (1 p.m. ET) service are to be announced later today.

The program will also be simulcast at Los Angeles' nearby Nokia Theatre.
