Unfriendly Skies: Airline Traffic Slips in June

U.S. air traffic fell in June as the tough economy continues to hit airlines hard, according to figures released by carriers today.

American Airlines reported that RPMs in the month was 10.9 billion, down 8.1 percent. United Airlines reported RPMs were down 7.5 percent to 10.6 billion. U.S. Airways said revenue passenger miles (RPMs) for the month were 5.4 billion, down 4.1 percent versus June of 2008.

American Eagle Airlines reported RPMs were 7.0 billion, down 5.0 percent from last year. AirTran Airways reported RPMs were down 6.5 percent to 1.76 billion. Alaska Air Group Inc reported Alaska Airlines RPMs were 1.64 billion, down 2.6 percent. Horizon Air RPMs were down 9.2 percent to 22.6 million.

WestJet, a Canadian airline, reported RPMs were down 7.1 percent, to 1.029 billion.
