Rome - China's Zhao Jing smashed the world record in the women's 50 and won the second gold medal of swimming for China at the FINA World Championships, local Businesstimes reported on Friday morning. Zhao clocked a stunning time of 27.06, which crushed Anastasia Zueva's world record of 27.38.

The performance put the record back in Zhao's grasp, which she previously set with a 27.67 to tie Sophie Edington earlier this year.

The top four swimmers all beat Zueva's world record heading into the race as Germany's Daniela Samulski took second in 27.23. China's Gao Chang gave her country a 1-3 finish on the podium with a 27.28, while Zueva faded to fourth in 27.31.

Zhao Jing, a female Chinese swimmer who was born on December 31 of 1990 in Wuhan, has been called "star of hope" by the Chinese.

Zhao set up two records previously in 2006 Asian Championships - 28.50, 50m back and 2008 National Champions Tournament & Olympic Selective Trials - 59.81, 100 m back. She also competed for Team China at the 2008 Summer Olympics 2008.
