After the announcement Friday, the Brazilian delegates attending the elections in Copenhagen, including Brazil's President Luis Ignacio Lula da Silva and famous soccer player Edison Arantes do Nascimento, best known as Pele, jumped out their seats and embraced each other in excitement.

"Like in every compettion there can only be one winner," the Committee's President Jacques Rogge said ahead of the announcement.

In Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana beach, hundreds of people gathered to celebrate the election.

"For the others it would be just one more Games, for us it would be an unparalleled opportunity," Lula da Silva said before the vote. "It would send a message the Olympic Games belong to all people, all continents and all humanity. Give us this chance and you will not regret it, be sure."

Chicago, Tokyo and Madrid were the other contestants for the election with Chicago being the first city eliminated.
