Security Tool Virus Removal

08 October 2009 @ 02:55 pm ET

Security Tool is a computer virus pretending to be a security application and is promoted through pop-ups, trojans and malware webites.

It tells you that there is a virus in your computer and will trick you into installing the program. The rogue anti-spyware programs are distributed through websites that simulate virus scans, then the user is told to download the software to clean his PC.

Once installed, the Security Tool will start automatically each time you turn on your PC and log in to Windows. Then it will start scanning your computer and show you a list of fake infections.

When you try to clean the infected files, you are prompted to buy the software.

To get rid of this software, you need MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, a legitimate software that will get you rid of all those rogue applications and malware.

How to remove Security Tool:

* Download MalwareBytes Anti-Malware.
* Install the mbam-setup.exe file.
* To install it, just press next and don’t edit any options if you are not sure what you’re doing.
* After the installation is ready, MalwareBytes Anti Malware will start automatically and will require you to update the software, so just press OK.
* Go to the Scan tab, select “Perform Quick Scan” and press “Scan.”
* MalwareBytes Anti Malware will now scan all your PC for malware, including the Security Tool.
* You will see a “The Scan completed successfully. Click ‘Show Results’ to display all objects found” prompt once the scan is finished. Press OK.
* Now press “Show Results.”
* You will see a list of malware applications, including the Rogue.SecurityTool. Be sure to select them all and press “Remove Selected.”
* After MalwareBytes Anti Malware finishes the cleaning, you can close the program and be sure your PC is clean.

We have found that upon installation of mabm, the spyware/virus will delete malwarebytes exe file, mabm.exe. You will have to install it on another computer and bring the exe from that computer over to the infected host.

I found that this works for me. 1. Go into your C Drive and look for the documents and settings/all user/application data. 2. Make sure that Application Data is not set to hidden, if it is uncover it. 3. Restart and go into Safe Mode. 4. While is Safe Mode, return to application data and search for the folder that has Secuirty Tool. (hint: check for random numbers). 5. Delete that folder, while still in Safe mode. 6. Run your favorite anti-malware program, such as the Norton. I had to do this since secuirty tool wrecked Malwarebytes for me. 7. Download and re-install Malwarebytes after your anti-malware program does its necessary tasks. 8. Run Malwarebytes, while still in safe mode and follow all instructions it gives you. If that doesen't work, look for a person who makes a living repairing software.

Anyone try cleaning and then doing System Restore? Seems like the best bet.

Oct 11, 2009 8:04am

I have tried going into safe mode but it just comes up with loads of mswindows things and then doesn't do anything. It seems to stick on a the black screen with white writing and won't boot up into safe mode. Is this because if the virus? My Malware won't work and I can't delete one of the random number files. I have Norton but it doesn't seem to pick this virus up. Any other suggestions or shall I just do a system restore? Thanks

Try downloading and run ComboFix from combofix.org. This is a great tool to clean some of this extortion ware. Note: run it first from safe mode, then try MalwareBytes Anti-Malware in regular mode. Hope this helps. PC tech - 10Yrs.

I couldn't get anything to work on my computer due to this virus. Everything was black except for the "System Tool" windows saying I had plenty of viruses. So, I had to boot in safe mode, then do system restore. That worked! I then ran MalwareBytes as a precaution. Anyone know if there are punishments for these people that create these viruses?

I've been battling this thing for four days, and just when you think that order is being restored it comes back with a vengence. This is actually the third of these supposed "anti-virus software" viruses that I've seen, but the previous two were deleted simply by doing a System Restore. This one turned off my System Restore and modified the screen in Properties that allows you to turn it back on, among other things. I've tried downloading some programs to get rid of it, but it always managed to interefere with or block the process. I'm copying all of my files in preparation for possibly having to completely reformat the hard-drive. I would just like five minutes in a room alone with the person responsible for this.

Hopefully this will help someone: We had the malware on a desktop. Symptoms were the same as others... Bogus "security tool" pops up, reports a large number of bogus files infected, suggests to go to their website and pay to get their software to fix it. Desktop icons were hidden, only thing showing on screen generally was the "security tool" screen Could not get into safe mode on reboot, would get blue screen of death Could not run regedit, it would immediately shut down on startup Could not run Malwarebytes' Anti-malware program SAV would report one file infected, would suggest a reboot, file would come back infected each time, never removed Could not get into task manager, it would immediately shut down on startup Tried all of the above. Tried a vbs script to delete the S.T. registry entries, no luck Tried to rename Malwarebytes mbam.exe to winlogon.exe, no luck Tried a SAV full system scan, no luck, only turned up file it initially reported (had latest copy of data) Tried RegAssassin from Malwarebytes, no luck When I tried RegAssassin over and over there was a long enough delay in the PC to where I could open up task manager for running processes. Once I did that I found a rogue .exe with a string of numbers. Once I killed that, all .exe's were allowed to run. Got into regedit and deleted entries listed in Symantec link. Also went into \documents and settings\\Application Data\nnnnnn folder and deleted it (it was the same number as the rogue .exe program, a random string of numbers. Also, went into start->run->msconfig startup tab just to be sure. Rebooted, S.T. didnt show up, could then run full SAV scan and Malwarebytes against PC, all appears clean. Hope this helps.............

Oct 12, 2009 2:48pm

pt II If you're not able to get into task manager to stop it, try opening up windows explorer and looking for the folder listed in my previous msg \documents and settings\\Application Data\nnnnnn for the nnnnnnn.exe (random string of numbers) and rename it to nnnnnn.doc and rebooting. You might get some messages on reboot, but go past them. Or you might try the get into msconfig method and uncheck it. These are the things that worked for me........... hth

Somebody needs to post on the internet the name and address of the company that is collecting money from these "uploads". We could all then sue them for all of the time and resources that we lost removing the crap that they clandestinely put onto our machines.

This was on my boyfriend's laptop; he just kept restoring to a safe date since he was still able to get around the "scanner" to his Start button. I couldn't find the program in Task Manager (which was "disabled by the administrator" - had to fix that first) so I followed this article exactly. Worked perfectly and now it's gone! Thanks!!

DO NOT use system restore to try & get rid of these rogue anti-spyware programs. That is where they target so go with any restore. Use Malwarebytes antimalware on most of them but this security tool is a pain as it stops a lot of windows services from running. I've put a page up on my own site with some info for people on these nasties, hope it helps :) Andy

We got the virus by clicking the "x" to close a pop up. Wasn't blocked by pop up blocker. Norton did not detect it & couldn't remove it. Symantec wanted $140 to remove it. Luckily, I was able to save what information I wanted/needed & then re-installed the operating discs. It wouldn't let me system restore, or delete anything. I could get into add/remove programs in safe mode, but it didn't show p in there. Had to install discs from safe mode as well. But that seems to have done the trick, thankfully. Best Buy wanted $200 to do it. Does anyone know what this does other than trying to take your money? I mean, could the hackers/whomever have been getting info off my computer? Do we all need to be going through the identity theft mess because of this?

I know slightly more than nothing about computers! My mum got this Security Tool virus on my laptop somehow. It is so sneakly, wouldn't let me run any programs except IE. I looked it up on my boyfriend laptop as I couldn't put up with the pop up bogus alerts telling me I was infected with x viruses. I then downloaded a removel tool from windowsprotection website but the virus stopped it running. I couldn't run AVG either as it blocked that. Couldn't go into help to do a system restore. Tried to go to symantec website butn the virus diverted me somewhere else! I booted into safe mode and msconfig and unchecked it in the start up and tried to find the virus folder and delete the contents but the virus blocked that. Then when I rebooted normally it had replicated itself and I still couldn't run the damn removal program! So i went back into safe mode and re did all of the above then rebooted normally and I could do a system restore, which I did, and have updated AVG and run a scan that has come back clear (although AVG didn't catch it in the first place) and I cant find any trace of it now. Is that it? Have I managed to beat it or will it be lurking, or is there something alse I should do? Any help appreciated.

Folks: I absolutely Hate this SOB!!! But I paid him the $50 he wanted and so far it is the best $50 I have ever spent!!! He returned control of my computer to me and allows me, so far, to continue operating. Now, I am NOT stupid and I realize that I must eliminate this Virus completely. What i gained was the complete use of by computer to do so. I was using CA anti-virus protection and He Beat them and others. I have added Spyware Doctor from PC Tools to combat this virus. But this virus requires very special Virus Removal capabilities. PC Tools is aware of the Special Needs and are Releasing a New Version #7 to deal with this Virus. And the Install is NOT simple. PCTools is providing special assistance for this virus. I hate this SOB, but I must give this SOB great credit for his capabities in this endeavor. He is the "best" ever, My guess is that he is operating in India or Russia and he is an ex employee of some Anti-virus Software Company. He absolutely knows this technology and how to defeat it. I view him like Johnson Grass. I hate it but I have to respect it. It is very impressive. I would enjoy attending his execution some day. Good Luck All....

I have been working on this and making progress. What a mess. Noors instructions are helpful but here is my issue. The virus has hidden the "Folder Options" so I cant unhide the hidden folders. Also, I cant get an internet connection even if I was willing to pay these basta#ds a penny. The connection is good I just cant get an actual internet site. Anyone else? Is this the virus or do I have another issue?

Oct 23, 2009 12:55am

I can't see Hidden files/folders in my computer. Even I enable the option "Show hidden files/folders" in "Tools -> Folder Options", its automatically disabled again. Solution1: Go to your Start menu, click on Run and open up your Registry Editor by typing "regedit" without the quotes and pressing OK. Once there go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folde r\Hidden\SHOWALL Delete the value CheckedValue. (Its type should be REG_SZ and data should be 0 or 1.) Create a new DWORD value called CheckedValue (same as above, except that the type is REG_DWORD) by right clicking on the right pane->New->DWORD Value. Modify the value data to 1 (0x00000001). Solution 2: Open regedit and goto: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced In right-side pane, change value of "Hidden" to as following: 1 - To show hidden file 2 - To not show hidden files If you dont see folder option at all then try this Go to start--->Run-->regedit(type)-->HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies here check all the below folders in policies they are (Active desktop, run, system) you will have dont show folder options please delete it........ Also check this in start--->Run-->regedit(type)-->HKEY_Current_User\\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies(Repeat the above step) same location......Revert back to me at Noorsmarty@gmail.com

This thing is killing me. I was able to unhide the folders and now see the 778395953.exe files. The number only files. I deleted most of them. One of them refuses to let me delete it. It says I am not authorized or the program is being used by another program/user. I think if I can get rid of this last file I am clear....how do i delete it? I have tried renaming it and it won't let me. I still cant access task manager. Sorry if this has been answered. I am basically computer illiterate. It is located in my c:\Windows\Temp Folder.
37.
Oct 23, 2009 10:55am

also....I am in the "Directory Services Restore mode". My admin capabilities are not available in this mode either.

JUST FOLLOW NOOR'S INSTRUCTIONS! i spent close to 3 hrs trying everything and his idea took care of it. Below is a reprint from his above post. NOW GO BUY SOME ANTI VIRUS SOFTWARE! Hi... If any body has this virus then turn off your computer...... Once you restart tap f8 key continously and you'll get "Windows Advance Menu option". Oct 23, 2009 3:53pm

yeah the problem with your instructions noor is that they dont help the people that get blue screens in every mode... whether its safe mode, service directory mode, last known good start, and the fact that now my desktop doesnt even come up anymore doesnt help much either. I'm guessing if your computer doesnt load in safe mode, regular mode, sevice directory mode, command prompt, last known good start, etc... then your computer is completely f'd. I couldnt see any other way to get into the computer if it doesnt load in any mode. Yeah, I'd be able to delete the thing if i could get into my computer... I think the main problem is when i cannot get into my computer anymore IN ANY MODE. Is there a way to get into the computer not using any of the above? i dont even care if its backing in somehow through Ubuntu... If its redownloading Windows and losing all of my data then fine, but all i'd like to do now is to get my files and redownload windows.
40.
Oct 23, 2009 10:32pm

Yeah follow Noorsmarty's instructions! They work great. Make sure you uncheack the folder optins though. I didn't at first and they remained hidden and I couldn't get rid of it. Also, if you are really green on computers the folder options is in the control panal.
41.
Oct 24, 2009 1:49pm

I've dealt with this thing before, and you don't have to pay a cent to get rid of it. All you have to do is restart, then after windows starts but before your startup programs run, just keep tapping ctrl alt del until task manager or the menu pops up. Once you've got task manager started, wait for Security Tool(string of numbers for the .exe. name) to start and kill it. Once you've done that, right click the Security tool icon on your desktop(if your desktop isn't shown, run explorer.exe) and click properties, then 'follow shortcut' or something to that effect. Delete the folder you end up in. Then, either do a system restore, or if you can't, just go into your registry by running regedit.exe and(yes, this will take a while) find all the entries that refer to the .exe file for Security Tool or mention it by name and delete them. If you're too lazy for that, try using some kind of antispyware/antivirus. A good free one I've found is Super Antispyware(free edition).

I tried suggestion number 41 last night and it worked great for me. It was so easy I was actually shocked.
43.
Oct 30, 2009 5:13am

I have managed to delete the Security Tool file but now my computer is still having problem. It takes more than 10 minutes to open up a program, I cannot print anything cos it says the printer is not responding. It won't open up my Symantec file and other programs. Opening up a folder would take "years"... please help!! What could possibly be wrong now???
44.
Oct 30, 2009 11:13am

This thing is a pain. I tried most the suggestions on this page and they didnt completely work. I got some control of my computer back but it was still a mess. I still couldnt access task manager, I couldnt "unhide" my hidden folders, when I did track down the virus folder it wouldnt let me delete it, and it was blocking my internet connection. Here is what I finally did that worked. I created a "new user" and logged in from the directory service restore mode. In this "new user" I was able to access the task manager and killed the 577345437573.exe process. I downloaded "Malwarebytes" from my laptop, copied to a cd, and then ran it in the "new user" created on my infected computer. Then I rebooted onto my computer the regular way and re-ran Malwayrebytes. 300 infected files. Not only did it get rid of Security tool but it cleaned out a bunch of other stuff and my computer is running faster than ever. Byebye Security Tool. You put up a good fight. You had me in a corner but I knocked you out in the 12th round.
45.
Nov 5, 2009 12:04am

Also the problem with Noor's instruction is that he did not state what version on Windows ou do that. I'm on XP and on XP just go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ The random number folder for this virus is there. Just delete it. Also, I got this virus from a proxy server and by clicking "X" on a pop-up. I'm using an older version of windows. Anyways, Just switch to Ubuntu Linux or any other Linux distro you might like and you don't have to worry about this crap if you "hardened" your Linux system!

My computer was infected with this Security Tool virus and I was unable to access my system restore or access Malaware (which I had already previously installed). I wasn't able to start up in Safe Mode. My desktop was gone and the virus took over continuously prompting me to check for errors, etc. I couldn't delete the virus file or folder in c:/Documents and Settings/All users/Application data/ because the virus wouldn't let me. I couldn't stop the process in Task Manager because it wouldn't let me do that either. This jerk of a virus is very tricky! THIS IS WHAT WORKED FOR ME: I finally managed to get to the Application Data folder again and i simply RENAMED the .EXE FILE and the FOLDER. (it was just a series of numbers- that's how you know it's this virus) By doing this, I was able to restart my computer, delete the file and folder I had just renamed and then FINALLY run Malaware. Hope this helps!
47.
Nov 5, 2009 7:53am

I tried to follow the steps on comment 24. When I clicked on the Application Data button though it said the access is denied. Anyone know how to get around this problem?
48.
Nov 5, 2009 8:24am

also do we need to unable the number file as well when looking into msconfig?
49.
Nov 7, 2009 5:16am

I deleted the numerical folder with all the contents, but there still seems to be bits lingering somewhere. I can't browse the internet without being directed to some weird site. I have been looking for any left over bits, but can't find anything. Anyone?
50.
Nov 7, 2009 6:24am

Got same issue as mwek above. Eveything seemed to be fixed but browser searches get redirected to some weird sites . I emailed norton to ask for a simple solution since I have their antivirus software to begin with; and they said they would charge me $99 to make it go away completely . One wonders if they and others are the ones creating this viruses fir profit.....

Nov 9, 2009 11:18pm

Thanks man, Removing the files from the c drive/all users/random numbers helped me a lot
52.
Nov 13, 2009 11:22am

hmm.. i mustve caught it in the early stages because it made my desktop black but i was still able to download and run malware bytes, which proceeded to complete the scan and get rid of everything. i had to reboot my computer because there were two files which could only be deleted on reboot. but so far the security tool thing hasnt popped up and isnt showing up in the taskbar. is it definately gone or should i be paranoid about it being dormant somewhere?
53.
Nov 13, 2009 6:16pm

Never mind spending money on the removal of "Security Tool". It looked really ugly at first but instinct told me not to heed its "advice" to act to remove it with its own software.. After all those who are behind Security Tool are the ones who made mit difficult and nagging to remove. I persevered and my hunch was correct. I performed a full scan with Windows Defender, making sure that my PC didn't go into slep mode or the like. Windows Defender detected it, identified it and asked if me to apply "remove it". I applied "remove" and Windows Defender zapped it.

Hello Mr papa if you have the virus which is redirecting you then the simple solution for it would be as follows..... Go to google.com and type Combofix in search its a free tool and a very powerful one, would recommend you download this form one of the links available and run it..... (If you check in the links given youll have a link bleeping computer.com you can download tool from here and read the instaructions before running it)...... Hi, Noor, when I go into advance menu and select "directory services mode" it comes back with a blank blue screen. any other suggestion?
57.
Nov 14, 2009 10:33am

Noor's directions seemed to have worked...this virus is really tricky! Once in safe mode, I had to search around for the folder (maybe because I'm running Windows Vista, not sure), as the directory Noor specified didn't exist and I had no option to "run" from the Start menu. But I found it, and at least for now, my computer is letting me access my files. Next I am instaling anti-virus software and anti-malware to keep us protected. Thanks Noor!

I kept hitting control/alt/delete until I finally got a dialogue box open and stopped the software from running. Then I did a system restore to the day before this thing got me. Everything seems to be running OK. What gets my goat is I realized that the software was bogus, but I thought buying the software would fix it. They got me for $49.99 and I am afraid to try to get my money back. Maybe I will contact my bank and let them handle it. Fifty bucks is hard to just give away these days, or any day.

I got it off my computer pretty easy, kind of like #24 did. I did a search for "security tools", then I "opened the file location". There was a shortcut to it, so I opened the location from there. Then I could not delete it, so I minimized the window and drug it over to the recycle bin. From there I was able to just delete it!!

popped up today on my wife's new laptop. I ran a Norton full scan which detected and eliminated it. At least it seems to be gone.
