Verizon's Droid phone pokes fun at the iPhone

19 October 2009 @ 03:08 pm ET

Verizon increased its bid to generate buzz over its Motorola Android-powered 'Droid' this weekend by rolling out an ad that questions the usefulness of Apple's iPhone.

"iDon’t have a real keyboard. iDon’t run simultaneous apps. iDon’t take night shots. iDon’t allow open development,” reads copy posted on the iDroid website.

"iDon’t customize. iDon’t run widgets. iDon’t have interchangeable batteries. Everything iDon’t, Droid does."

According to early reports, the Droid, which is powered by Verizon Wireless, will include a full QWERTY keyboard, a 5-megapixel digital camera, Wi-Fi, an interchangeable battery, Bluetooth 2.0, GPS, and a 854×480 touchscreen.

The Droid is reportedly a three-way effort between Verizon, Motorla, and Google.

TechCrunch's Michael Arrington called the Droid "the real deal," saying that the device "poses a different and more significant challenge to the iPhone than any other phone to date."

They left out the most important statement, "iWon't be able to sell anywhere near a million phones in one day no matter how snarky my ads are".

Who cares if it can sale 1 million phones in a day. If the damn thing is awesome and works well , thats all I care about. iphone users drive me crazy thinking that their phone can't be touched by anyone. If this thing works then I will be happy, I would like it to where if I put my phone down next to someone else I didn't have to worry grabbing the wrong one. Variety is the spice of life.

Frankly its sad its taken this long to get a phone with Verizon thats worth waiting for. VZs phones suck, but their coverage is second to none. The phone should be cool, but could just be the next new fad tech. Till its in hand, it's alot of hype. Be cautious.

I don't care how good the iphone is, if there is no service what good is it. Verizon always has coverage. This phone will have people leaving the iphone for better coverage.

i am so glad that apple has an iPhoneout there to keep the Cult of MAC creeps tangled away from the community! Bravo Apple!! Bravo... so muchattention is given to the MAC Cult is a win win for all. the cult keeps out of community and won't bother most with their over-confidence hype.

all apple users are smug losers that think all of their apple stuff is better than god...i will compare apple users (especially iphone users) to south parks representation of people that buy hybrid cars (you guys suck too), go smell your own farts with your sweet iphone user friends...SUUUUCKS!

i have an iphone and it's amazing. since i have an iphone it means i have at&t service. and guess what verizon haters??? i have service. ALL THE TIME! this droid looks lame, bulky and ugly. nothing will compare to the iphone

Oct 25, 2009 10:03pm

AT&T service has never let me down. I dont know why everyone thinks AT&Ts coverage is so poor. I have yet to get to the point where i havent had coverage. Plus the driod looks so ugly its comical that phone made it past prototype...iPhone 4 Lyfe!
13.
Oct 25, 2009 10:45pm

i recently just switch from verison to AT&T because the service sucked! i have yet to drop a call and my iphone is pretty bad ass but i do think there could be some tweaks to make it better...one for example is a flash for the camera!!!!

Oct 26, 2009 2:34pm

Verizon; best network, best phone...any questions?!!

Oct 26, 2009 4:00pm

Droid forgot to say "I don't have over 85,000 apps". At the end of the day, if it doesn't have the software selection like an iPhone has it will be just LIKE a Mac: pretty with no support.

i have an iphone and although I love it, I really hate AT&T's service. I live in western Montana so it's pretty spotty. When I had my old LG chocolate with Verizon I had near perfect service. I might just have to switch back to them because of it.
17.

1) iphone! should learn how to spell "verison" (try Verizon). 2) AT&T service is good if you live in a large metropolitan area but even then it's spotty at times. 3) I agree Verizon phones suck but anytime I have traveled anywhere in the US I was always able to make a call. Same can't be said for AT&T. 4) I'm due for a new phone. Going to check this out when it comes out.

it looks really lame, shame! it looks like a phone that you could get at walmart in the toy department.

im a verizon wireless user. i cant wait for this phone to come out. its going to blow the iPhone out of the water. they took this long to come out with it because they wanted to make it better than the iPhone. Notice how the iPhone has so many new editions of it because the original has so many bugs. verizon wanted to prevent that and come out with one version of the phone that works great. so, all you iPhone users that think your phone cant be touched, you will see how brilliant this phone is compared to that garbage iPhone that breaks everytime you turn around..
20.
Oct 27, 2009 1:58am

its kinda ugly, I'd have to use it to see if I like it. I hated iphone before i tried it though

Oct 27, 2009 2:12am

all of you Verizon fans who are whining about the iphone because of its service from at&t should shut up for a sec because, come spring 2010, at&t will have too renegotiate their contract with apple to be the exclusive carriers of the iphone or the iphone will be open to all cell carriers. i personally really doubt that at&t will come up with enough money to convince apple they should stick with them when all the other service providers in the country will be offering bids. lets be honest; the only reason at&t has come back so strong since 06 (and have the money to keep making those stupid "rollover minutes") is because people would join specifically for the iphone.

Oct 27, 2009 6:05pm

Iphones are cool i agrre but Verizon definitely has better coverage. AT&T drops calls all the time and my friends with Iphones all hate it. They have all recently unlocked their Iphones to use with T-Mobile because it has better coverage. This driod to me basically looks like a little different version of T-mobiles first Google phone the G1 if im remembering correctly. And a tid bit to AT&T people who think that hey are better cause of iphone contract, Verizon turned down apple when they asked them to be the sole provider

sorry Agree*

the ATT coverage is fairly decent where I live in the northeast, but I would generally say that yes Verizon has better coverage. The issue that I have with Verizon is the lack of SIM cards like GSM carriers have. Anyways, I'm glad someone is finally making adds to combat those smug apple commercials (be it iphone or comp) that tout the latest and greatest that other phones have had for years

The iPhone works. Period. PCs and most others don't. Some inner city areas had problems. Those problems are being addressed. The DROID looks like the typical Motorola cra because it is, a Motorola. No one who uses an iPhone misses the BlackBerry's keyboard. The iPhone's is three times as fast once you learn how to use it. 75,000 apps. Case closed. Apple stock - have you seen it lately? Have you ever used an iMac? No, head-up-the-ass PC users who can never get their computers to work for any length of time. That is what they'll also experience with the DROID. A piece of crap just like the PC and Windows 7. Why Apple stock keeps rising? iMac, iPhone, the most satisfied users. I own all three, iPhone, iMac, Apple stock. My investment in Apple stock will by me iMacs, iPhones and BMWs for life. Thank you, I rest my case.

I was going to type something about what a self-important jackass 25 sounds like, but then I remembered I have a life.
27.
Oct 29, 2009 1:06am

A&TT is horrible where I live, so I have Verizon and because it's awesome coverage (I travel very often in long distances) I will most likely be getting the "Iphone KILLER"..the droid... Hopefully the droid will be as good as it is supposed to be. Dear Andrew...you sound like a dick-face who clearly wishes he had all of those things... This is why most people can't stand apple users... The end.

Verizon WIreless sucks. I love my At&t!

You people are arguing over a bunch of nonsense. There are pros and cons to EVERY product made in ANY industry. The iPhone just happened to kick-off the competition. That's all. It is not 200 ounces of gold with iTunes built-in -- it's an over-priced piece of plastic. Stop taking this so close to heart. All of these companies are making money off of you no matter what type of phone you have.

Will the Droid have SIM card capabilities? I travel internationally for work and would like to use a phone. I know the Blackberry and iPhone have SIM. I want an iPhone but don't live in an area where AT&T is an option. i can't type on the Storm and the screen on the BBerry is too small. Also, will the Droid feel more like a PC or an Apple platform? Thanks?

@reno - You can actually hack the iPhone to where you can get another network. I know you can put a SIM card in it and get T-Mobile. I haven't yet experimented with other networks, so I wouldn't know about Verizon, but the iPhone kinda has crappy protection for stuff like that, so I don't think it would be very hard. xP About the Droid phone. I agree that the iPhone should get beaten soon. I don't like Apple freaks that think the iPhone will be the best thing forever. It's annoying. All I'm waiting for is Microsoft to come out with a phone now. :)

For everyone complaining...verizon is also getting the iphone in the spring.

all ican say is its really really kool

Nov 6, 2009 11:52pm

if the iphone sucks so bad then why is every phone maker using it as the measuring stick? Sad part is, its the first crack at a phone apples made. How many phones have been made by motorola? It's funny how every phone that is "supposedly" going to beat the iPhone looks like it's trying to look like it. LOL.

I came very close to buying an iPhone but decided to wait because I preferred not to switch from Verizon as provider. I just got my Droid a week ago and love having a real keyboard. My husband and I have been very pleased with Verizon's coverage. Now I'm just waiting to find out if I can use Droid for international travel.
