AT&T may lose Apple iPhone's exclusivity, CEO says

SAN FRANCISCO - AT&T may lose its exclusive deal with Apple for the iPhone, which lifted its third-quarter profit with 3.2 million activations over the period.

The gains in subscribers reported on Thursday represented the highest third-quarter net gain in the company's history, bringing its subscribers to 81.6 million in total. It saw 3.2 million iPhone activations, of which 40 percent were new customers.

While AT&T beat profit expectations on Wall Street with the help of iPhone, the company will not have exclusive access to Apple's handset forever, said Ralph de la Vega, CEO of AT&T Mobility.

With few details provided, de la Vega said AT&T would survive after the iPhone moves to other carriers.

"We have a legacy of having a great portfolio... that will continue after the iPhone is no longer exclusive to us," de la Vega said in a conference call after the earnings announcement. "We think we will continue after the iPhone... to drive (results)."

He expected its High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) 7.2 technology to be the next pipeline for continued growth.

"Even if we lose exclusivity, we will be the only carrier with HSPA 7.2 and (new devices) will work on our network faster," de la Vega said. "I feel as strongly as ever (about the capability of devices in our lineup)."

However, one industry analyst hold different views about the loss of exclusivity.

"It will be very negative for AT&T as the popular handset is its tremendous growth engine," said Brian Marshall, analyst at Broadpoint AmTech.

Apple started its exclusivity deal with the carrier in the middle of 2007, which gave them the benefit to make custom services, like visual voicemail. Apple now prefers multiple carriers for the handset, Marshall contends.

He also predicted that Verizon may become the next iPhone carrier in the U.S by 2010, despite the fact that it recently teamed with Google and Motorola to take on Apple and AT&T.

The consumer electronics maker has already moved to end its overseas iPhone exclusivity with multi-company agreements reached in the U.K. and Canada. Apple's recent Unicom contract to sell iPhone in China is non-exclusive and it's hoping to ink a second deal with China Mobile, the world's largest mobile operator.

The trend raises hopes in the U.S. that other carriers may also get the iPhone. According to Morgan Stanley analyst Kathryn Huberty, Apple could easily double its iPhone market share to 12 percent by getting more carriers in U.S.

Apple was not available for immediate comment.

AT&T hasn't explained why it's monthly charge for the iPhone doesn't ebb off after it's iPhone subsidy is covered in the first two years. Pretty arrogant.

AT$T Sucks! the moment the consumer needs customer service one enters a looping nightmare of ignorance and lies. Have fun getting any refunds or fixing your credit, wrongly affected by simple transactions with them. I fear it's entire workings are geared that way rather than just a few cretins hampering the process, Corporate Succubus culture.

I am not a huge AT&T fan, but I think if you were to put 7 million iPhones on Verizon's network right now, it would crumble.

I prefer Verizon over AT&T but i also prefer Android over the iPhone. It may be a little to late for apple.

I don't understand why everyone is so in love with Verizon. I'm not a fan of CDMA I feel almost restricted when using one. I like how the GSM uses SIM cards and you would be able to just move your phone right there and then. Most of the world is using GSM network so really you have access to many other phones that are unlocked, just pop your sim card in and you're good to go. Of course AT&T wants to keep Apple, with those percentages I wouldn't want to let them go either but it was sure to happen later, they knew they couldn't keep it exclusively to themselves.

I was with Verizon from 1996-2008. I strarted with them when they were airtouch cellular. At first they were good and customer service was good, but by 2008 I was so bored with their lack of phones when compared to other carriers. In July of 2008 it took the iPhone 3g to make me switch carriers. Finally a device that at the time was ahead of the competition. I have been very happy with AT&T an the great customer service they provide. Verizon got to big an there customer service took a backseat. They are always attacking their competition in their adds, and are the ones who turned down apple originally when Steve Jobs had Verizon as their first choice for exclusivity. AT&T to me has what I need as there coverage is as good as Verizon, but there customer service is much better and that's what's important to me.

I currently use a Blackberry with T-Mobile. I hope when the time comes for a switch that iPhone will become available to T-Mobile customers. It's pinch-zoom feature is enough to leave even the Google phone in its wake.

I wonder if any of this speculation was brought on by the FCC investigations. The end of exclusivity can't come soon enough. Although I've been happy enough with my AT&T service, I still find the cost (especially for texting) to be far too high. Some competition could help drive the price down.

I was a Verizon customer. Verizon customer service sucks. I love my IPhone 3GS. I have had an iPhone since the first generation. Apple was very forward looking and now everybody is copying them.

Good! AT&T's coverage in San Francisco SUCKS. Just moved here from DC. This is NOT a case of, put X number of phones on Verizon and watch that network crumble. I have a phone on both (Verizon phone for work) and AT&T is a battery sucking back hole. Sure sign that there aren't enough towers. If the phone has to "scream" louder to get on a tower it's gonna drink more juice. I can completely kill my iPhone battery in 2 hours here. Used to get at least 5 hours of heavy usage in DC. W T F ? ! ! ! ?

I am extremely happy with At&t and the customer service that they porvide. I have only had 2 issues and both were handled in a flash. at&t really does take great care of their customers the only people who are upset with their customer service are the ones who screw up their bills themselves, and drop/lose thier phones and get upset when they can't get a new phone for their own stupidity. I have traveled all over europe and went with a friend of mine who had verizon... while i was talking it up with some friends back home he was begging me to use my GSM phone. Verizon is very scared of at&t as proof with their new adds about maps... I guess they are following in the footsteps of the former alltel where they have to bash the competition verbally to get ahead since their handsets can do it for them.
