In a statement, IBM Chairman and CEO Samuel Palmisano said McNerney, who held the top job at manufacturer 3M Co before joining Boeing in 2005, has "decades of experience running complex, global enterprises."

The addition of McNerney brings the International Business Machines Corp board to 13 members, the company's statement added.
