Anglo restarts Chile copper mines after quake

Global miner Anglo American said Monday it had restarted operations at Los Bronces and El Soldado copper mines in Chile after a massive earthquake cut supply to the deposits.

Anglo American spokesman Marcelo Esquivel said energy supply was still unstable, but that all operations restarted early on Sunday in both mines that produce around 280,000 tonnes of copper per year.

He added that the 61,000 tonne-per-year Mantoverde copper mine was working at full capacity after it was briefly offline due to energy problems early on Saturday after the quake hit Chile.

Roads to Los Bronces, a key mine of Anglo American in mining powerhouse Chile, were in good condition.
