Gold hits record highs in sterling, euro terms

LONDON, March 2 (Reuters) - Gold priced in both euros and sterling hit record highs in Europe on Tuesday as the precious metal benefited from volatility in the currency markets, with spot gold prices XAU= also extending earlier gains.

Euro-priced gold XAUEUR=R touched a peak of 832.83 euros an ounce and was bid at 831.29 euros at 1459 GMT, against 823.66 euros late on Monday.

Gold priced in sterling XAUGBP=R also rose to a new record high of 754.46 pounds an ounce, before easing back a touch to 753.41 an ounce, versus 744.85 pounds on Monday. (Reporting by Jan Harvey; Editing by Anthony Barker)
