U.S. expects to agree on new arms deal "soon"

President Barack Obama and Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev are committed to concluding a new pact to cut nuclear arms soon, the White House said after the two leaders spoke by telephone on Saturday.

"They had a good conversation and reviewed the progress and consensus reached in the ongoing post-START negotiations in Geneva. The results of their talks are encouraging, and both leaders are committed to concluding an agreement soon," said Mike Hammer, spokesman for the White House's National Security Council.
