A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck Virginia Tuesday afternoon, temporarily evacuating government buildings and shutting down airports. The quake was felt as far north as upstate New York, and so far no injuries have been reported, but the mild panic had thousands turning to social networking for comfort and reassurance.

Within an hour of the quake, Ezra Klein of The Washington Post published the Top 17 Earthquake Tweets, which you can read in full here.

We lifted four of those for our Top Ten Earthquake Tweets:

@pareene: I think Chris Christie just jumped into the race.

@robdelaney: Did anyone I have a crush on's husband or boyfriend die in the earthquake? DM me.

@pattonoswalt: Not to panic anyone in NYC, but a screaming John Cusack just drove by in a limo that was missing a door.

@TomFornelli: WOLF BLITZER IS ON THE PHONE WITH THE EARTHQUAKE.

And here are the remaining six:

@StrictlyNumbers: Reportedly John Boehner has rejected the #earthquake 's initial magnitude and asked for more cuts.

@hsmittman: This earthquake is like when I lost my virginity. Everyone keeps asking ... 'Did you feel anything?' For the record, I did not.

Two from @danovation:Hipster earthquake. Really obscure. You probably haven't felt it. Also, Brooklyn felt the quake 6 months ago in a Gowanus club, already over it.

@hannahsatana: My thoughts & prayers go out to all the victims of the earthquake tweets.

@friedmanjon: Earthquake jokes are so 2:30.
