Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher have been uncharacteristically silent on the rumors swirling about a possible divorce due to the Two and Half Men star's philandering ways. While many other celebritites ignore speculation about their personal life, Demi and Ashton have long courted the spotlight; and until now, could be relied upon to speak their minds on any issue -- no matter how personal.

Ashton and Demi -- better known as @aplusk and @mrskutcher -- were among the first celebrities to embrace Twitter and harness the control over their public images that social media offers. Since then, dozens of other celebrities have followed suit; and these days, news often breaks on Twitter before the media gets hold of it. (That said, TMZ still often manages to out-scoop just about everyone; although not in the case of Ashton's alleged affair).

Demi Moore has over four million followers on Twitter; her husband has 7.7. million. Both stars use Twitter to communicate directly with their audience, and often with each other; and both must be aware that their followers (and the curious public) are anxiously awaiting comment from one of them about the alleged affair and the breakup rumours.

But they've only offered us cryptic crumbs. On Wednesday night, Kutcher made the most (seemingly) direct comment on the rumors thus far when he tweeted Don't Believe The Hype by Public Enemy. (Couldn't he have been just a bit more inventive?)

Moore's tweets have been more Delphian in nature: Much has been made about a photo she posted of herself with her eyes closed, accompanied by the message: I see through you. And on Sept. 23, Moore waxed philosophical with a quote from Epictetus: When we are offended at any man's fault, turn to yourself & study your own failings. Then you will forget your anger.

Fox News reported that extra security had been called to the Moore/Kutcher residence while the couple (and presumably their handlers) dealt with 'the issue... behind closed doors.

But the last time there was an issue -- namely, Kutcher's alleged affair with Brittney Jones -- Moore and Kutcher publicly joined forces against their common enemy (Star magazine) and tweeted threats to sue for defamation.

Not so this time. Does this mean the rumors are true?

We won't know until one of the stars finally responds to the allegations, or until the alleged mistress Sara Leal finally finds an outlet willing to pay her $250,000 for the story, which first broke on the TheDirty.com.

Some are saying that what Leal really wants is for Kutcher to pay her hush money. Sara is talking to multiple media outlets for a deal. She wants $250,000, but the offers haven't been as high. What she really wants is to get a payoff from Ashton. She has reached out to Ashton's team, a source told the New York Post.

IBTimes has contacted Leal's lawyer for a comment on the alleged affair, and it awaiting a response.
