Lingerie Football League

In case you didn't hear, football season is underway, and there's an old familiar name under center -- Rypien. You might remember Rypien as the former Washington State quarterback who led the Washington Redskins to the Super Bowl title in 1992.

But it's not Mark Rypien who is under center this football season. It's his daughter, Angela Rypien, and she's taking snaps on the field wearing -- blush -- a bra and panties. The 20-year-old Rypien is the starting quarterback for the Seattle Mist of the Lingerie Football League.

In the team's opener, Rypien, a personal stylist by day, led the Mist to a 42-8 win over the Green Bay chill. She completed just six of 15 passes, but threw for three touchdowns. Incidentally, she wears her father's number -- 7. Rypien didn't think she played so well in the team's first of four regular season games, and she said she was banged up despite leading the team to victory.

I have never hurt that bad, like, in my life, Rypien told Jim Weber of Yahoo Sports' Shutdown Corner about waking up the day after her first game. My body was in extreme physical pain. But it was fine...Other than the whiplash, I just didn't really want to move.

Angela Rypien's father, Mark watched her first game from the stands, saying afterwards that some real football was being played despite the rather skimpy appearances.

But enough about the actual game. This Lingerie Football League (LFL) is quite the curiosity.

It's a 7-on-7 tackle football league played by women in uniforms consisting of shoulder pads, knee pads, garters, bras, panties and ice-hockey-style helmets.

No joke. Think arena football meets women and mud wrestling.

The concept for the Lingerie Football League apparently originated from the Super Bowl halftime tv bit called the Lingerie Bowl. A man named Mitch Mortaza created the Lingerie Football League, and its administrative offices are in West Hollywood, appropriately.
