We have questions as to why this gentleman would be behind a counter at a public facility like McDonald's. Why wouldn't he be in the back as opposed to being in the front with the criminal history that he has? the father of the victim, whose name has not been released, said in a statement to NBC.

McDonald's posted a statement, Response to New York Assault, on its corporate Web site commenting on the incident.

The violence in this video is alarming and reprehensible. The franchisee of this restaurant has told us that the individual involved no longer works for her organization. We strive to ensure that our McDonald's restaurants are safe and welcoming for our customers. Our franchisee is fully cooperating with authorities in the investigation.

Following the release of the video by an onlooker on YouTube, which has amassed nearly one million hits since the incident, Carmen Paulino, the owner of the franchise, made a public statement.

I am extremely disturbed by the events captured on tape and am concerned for those injured, Paulino said. The actions of this individual are unacceptable and not characteristic of my employees.
