Justin Bieber is not out of the woods yet: An attorney for Mariah Yeater says paternity test negotiations are still underway. Reuters

Earlier Wednesday, TMZ reported that Mariah Yeater had dropped her paternity suit against Justin Bieber, and that Yeater's lawyers Lance Rogers and Matt Pare had abandoned the case.

But another attorney for Yeater said the paternity suit is not yet dead, in an interview on a Chicago news show. I did not step down and there is a legal team, Jeffrey Leving told WGNtv's Morning News.

It's a new legal team. In light of death threats against my client, strategies have been reviewed...the San Diego team are now replaced by John Carlson from Los Angeles.

[Yeater] believes Justin Bieber is the father, Leving continued. Negotiations are going on right now with Bieber's counsel. We're trying to negotiate a private, secure DNA test with the same safeguards that would exist if there was a court order.

The case is completely out of control, and I don't want something terrible to happen to my client or her child, he said.

In an exchange with one of the broadcasters, Leving said Yeater's team would have to start from scratch and file a new paternity suit if the private negotiations were unsuccessful, adding we may never have to do that.

My goal is to keep everything confidential, so that results will remain confidential...My goal is to try and keep my client and her child out of the media, Leving went on.

This matter is not over.

Last week, camp Bieber announced plans to countersue Yeater after Bieber took a DNA test, presumably ruling out his paternity. A source directly connected to Justin told TMZ that Yeater's lawyers appeared nervous when Bieber's lawyer Howard Weitzman outlined his plans.

Yeater claimed that she had a brief sexual encounter with Bieber at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif., in Oct. 2010. According to court records obtained by Star magazine, Yeater became intimately acquainted with the pop star after he put on a concert there.

After waiting for a short period of time with several young women, Justin Bieber appeared and engaged me in conversation, Yeater reportedly said in the lawsuit excerpted by RadarOnline.

Immediately, it was obvious that we were mutually attracted to one another, and we began to kiss. Shortly thereafter, Justin Bieber suggested that I go with him to a private place where we could be alone.

I agreed to go with him and on the walk to a private area, he told me he wanted to make love to me and this was going to be his first time... After walking away from the other people backstage, Justin Bieber found a place where we could be alone -- a bathroom.

Beiber would have been 16 at the time.

Mariah reportedly told a judge, When I later realized I was pregnant with Justin Bieber's baby, I tried to contact him through his representatives but no one ever called me back.

She added: On July 6, 2011, I gave birth to a baby boy. That was exactly 36 weeks and two days after the sexual encounter with Justin Bieber. Based upon the timing as well as the fact there were no other possible men that I had sex with that could be the father of this baby, I believe that Justin Bieber is in fact the father of my baby.

Beiber and his representatives have patently denied Yeater's claims from the start.

In a Nov. 4 appearance on Today, Beiber insisted that he had never met the woman.

I know Im going to be a target, but I'll never be a victim, he told Matt Lauer.Every night after the show, I go right from the stage to my car. So it's crazy that people want to make up such allegations. But to set the record straight: None of it is true.

Yeater's former boyfriend also accused his ex of lying about the alleged tryst with Bieber, and claimed she had initially said the child belonged to him.

I know it's not Justin Bieber, John Terranova told the New York Post. She just wants money. It's a scam.

Bieber's court-ordered paternity test had been scheduled for Dec. 15. Leving told WGNtv that a date for the private paternity test had not yet been set.
