Ann Hui's "A Simple Life" swept the awards at this year's Golden Horse Film Festival in Taiwan, Nov.26. Hui was named best director and expressed genuine surprise at winning over her younger competitors.
The veteran director also lauded her leading stars as they won best actor (Andy Lau) and best actress (Deanie Ip) for the same movie. The movie follows Ip's character that does her best to cope with the fact that she is getting older as she stays in servitude to her decidedly young master, Lau's character.
"When the director got the award, I was so happy. And when Deanie Ip got her award, it was wonderful. And this is a good movie and it portrays what a real simple life is really like," Lau said in a statement after his award.
"I was so happy when I got the award from Andy Lau," Ip exclaimed in a streak of funny coincidence where her costar was the 1 to give her own award.
Hui had some very poignant words to say about her own award.
"We will try our best to have this movie doing well in the box office in Hong Kong and so that way, that will help other directors as there will be more investors interested investing in this type of the movie," she said.
Hui is of course referring to Hong Kong's wanting film industry-Hui feels that through this award, perhaps a breath of fresh air will come through Chinese cinema and encourage directors, young and old, to do more quality films.
However, the winner of best film was Wei Te-sheng's "Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale," a war epic about an aboriginal tribe that eventually stands up to their Japanese rulers.
"I was very nervous but it's fantastic that we won this award especially when we got such strong competitors. And this movie is really encouraged us and I want to thank the Golden Horse committee, judges and thank you everyone," Wei humbly accepted his award.
