Jamaican entertainment star Vybz Kartel is currently in court facing one of the multiple murder charges against him, police have confirmed with the International Business Times.

Mr. Vybz Kartel is currently before the (Resident Magistrate's) Court as we speak, Dep. Supt. Steve Brown, who heads the Constabulary Communication Network, told the IBTimes.

The Constabulary Communication Network is the information arm of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

Brown said information regarding Kartel's escape from prison is not true and that the court will begin its preliminary inquiry regarding Kartel in February.

Kartel has been in prison since his Oct. 1 and has not been offered bail. He is being held as a suspect in two murders. The charges against the entertainer are for murder, conspiracy to murder, illegal possession of a firearm and possession of marijuana.

Reports of the entertainer's escape began spreading across social media platforms on Wednesday. Those reports claimed that Kartel and about seven other prisoners made an early morning scape on Wednesday from the New Horizon Adult Remand Centre in Kingston, after holding officers at gunpoint.

It has been alleged that the singer and the other escapees stole the uniforms and vehicles belonging to the Correctional Services Department around 1 a.m. before making their bold escape. Those reports have also claimed that people lost their lives in the escape.

Nothing like that [happened], Brown said in a telephone interview. There is nothing that happened this morning. Not even a quarrel.

Brown was a former inspector of police and was an information officer for Operation Kingfish.

Operation Kingfish is a multinational task force established for coordinating investigations. It has led to the arrest of some of Jamaica's toughest crime lords.

Cops have said the rumored escape may be an attempt to keep the deejay in the news.
