On Thursday, social activist Anna Hazare dared the government to have an open debate on the Lokpal Bill, threatening to court arrest in front of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi's residence, to protest what he believes is a deliberately weak draft of the anti-graft legislation.
Slamming the draft of the long-awaited Bill, approved by the Union Cabinet on Tuesday, as "useless", Hazare said the government was not listening to the needs of the people and had put together a law that could not benefit them.
"If Sonia Gandhi (Chairperson of the ruling coalition at the Centre) says this is a strong bill, let her come before and media and debate it before the people of India," Hazare said, continuing, "This bill is nikamma (useless). It is useless if Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is outside it."
The septuagenarian self-styled Gandhian said he would go ahead with his planned three-day hunger strike, starting from Dec. 27 in Mumbai and then lead a Jail Bharo Andolan ("Fill the Jails" movement) from Jan. 1 in front of residences of MPs.
"I will court arrest in front of Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi's (both Congress party lawmakers) house," Hazare said.
